Man charged with sex offences

Barry Anthony Bethell, 64, of Seasalter, Kent, appeared at Canterbury magistrates court today (8 February) charged with the following offences: two counts of sexual assault on a child, taking indecent images of a child contrary to section 1 of the Protection of Children Act and possession of indecent images of children. The case has been adjourned until 15 February and Bethell has been remanded.


Canterbury woman charged with 11 counts of theft

Karen Schmidt, 40, of Craddock Road, Canterbury, a registered care home manager, who had been charged with 11 counts of theft from a person which were committed between 29/11/2004 and 14/5/2007. She was charged on 24 January and appeared at Canterbury magistrates court on 30 January where she pleaded not guilty.


Man charged for driving offences

Jay John Stark, 26, of Sweyn Road, Cliftonville, Margate, has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking (dangerous), driving otherwise than in accordance with a driving license and driving without insurance on 27 January 2008. Stark was arrested at Herne Bay railway station. He appeared at Canterbury magistrates court on 4 February where his application for bail was rejected and he was remanded. He is expected to appear at Canterbury magistrates court on 3 March, where his case will be committed to Canterbury crown court.
On 27 January, a Suzuki vehicle was stolen from an address in Clifton Road, Margate, at 2.30pm. A short while later the vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision in Ramsgate Road involving a car with two women and two children. That afternoon, two more accidents involving the car were reported in Thanet. The car then crashed into a flowerbed outside Herne Bay rail station.


Canterbury man charged with theft from a vehicle and electricity abstraction

John Sylvanas Smith, 31, of Shelley Avenue, Canterbury, has been charged with theft from a vehicle.  He appeared at magistrates on 5 February, pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody. He will appear at Canterbury crown court for sentencing at a later date.
A laptop case was stolen from BMW parked in Barratts’ secure compound in Canterbury overnight 14-15 January.


Three Canterbury men charged following burglary

Three men are to appear at Canterbury magistrates court on 20 February with offences relating to a burglary. On 13 August 2007 a games console, DVDs, mobile phones and an air rifle were stolen from an address in Hertford Court, Warwick Road, Canterbury.

Ricky Francis Brown (25) has been charged with burglary. Ian Lawrie (41) has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. Ambrose Jones (33) has been charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, burglary and sexual assault. All three men are from Hertford Court, Canterbury.


Vehicle theft charges

Jack Hilding, 18, from Reed Avenue, Canterbury, has been charged with theft from a vehicle. A card CD player and tools were stolen from a vehicle in Tennyson Avenue overnight 12-13 January. Hilding will appear at Canterbury magistrates on 15 February.

A 16-year-old boy from Canterbury has been charged with theft from a vehicle. A drill was stolen from a Serco van on 21 January. The boy will appear at Dover magistrates court tomorrow (9 February).
